The first thing that needs to happen is to have your Brilliant Offer™. The second thing that needs to happen, of course, you need to show up and post in a strategic way so that you are discoverable to the people ready to hire you.
Your posts should position you as a valuable, credible, relevant resource for the people who are looking for the value you add with your good work.
How to Position Yourself to Be Discovered on Social Media by Your Ideal Clients
Having high-value content online makes it easier for people to discover you and be glad they did, grow your audience, position yourself as a Leading Authority™ and attract clients you love and who love working with you.
The good news is – you can create unlimited content… one piece at a time… so you always have a fresh chance to attract your ideal clients.
There is a caveat, though. It’s not about doing a brain dump of everything and the kitchen sink. It’s about…
CONTENT ESSENTIAL 1 – Relevancy
Your audience and your ideal clients have plenty of attention for you if what you talk about is relevant and valuable to them. (Let's define adding value as helping your audience get closer to the outcome they desire).
They are secretly hoping to discover the value you have to offer (particularly if they are dissatisfied with all the other alternatives out there).
CONTENT ESSENTIAL 2 – Empathy
Empathy can inform your voice and help you produce high-value content that connects with your audience because you talk to them (and not at them) from a place of both of you being human and sharing certain experiences.
So, let’s start with this great definition of empathy from this video:
I invite you to a quick empathy experiment - Think of a big, painful problem you’ve had. Go over the process till you solved it (if you have solved it).
We’re all human and we go through similar human experiences when we face big, painful problems. One predominantly similar experience is that we have all the attention in the world for someone we perceive can add value with empathy.
CONTENT ESSENTIAL 3 – Leading Authority™
However, empathy is not enough.
We also need authority and leadership in the mix.
As human beings going through a big, painful problem, we want to make sure that we are trusting a person who knows how to help us (authority) and who can point us in the right direction, hold our hand and bring us to a save place (leadership).
Leadership and authority are words tossed around a lot, so let’s have a closer look at what we mean.
The dictionary definition of ‘authority’ is someone who knows a lot about something. (Notice how the dictionary says ‘a lot’ and not ‘everything’).
According to merriam-webster.com/dictionary, authority is “the confident quality of someone who knows a lot about something or who is respected or obeyed by other people. A quality that makes something seem true or real. An individual cited or appealed to as an expert”.

Your content can position you as a Leading AuthorityTM without you needing to brag or call yourself an expert. With empathy, become a relevant resource for your audience by showing the way.
CONTENT ESSENTIAL 4 –Start Here
The simplest way of creating content is to start where your audience is. Make a list of the fears, frustrations, desires, goals, dreams, challenges, obstacles they KNOW they face.
That can give you all the content you can possibly need.
[FREE] Resource - One resource you can use time and time again is Quora (quora.com). It is an online community where people can ask their questions and experts can answer them. You can look up your topic and see what questions people have and what words they use to ask them. (You can even open an account and start answering questions if you wish).
Another resource is AnswerThePublic, where you can discover what people are asking about your area of expertise. (answerthepublic.com).
Answering questions is a fantastic way to add value but there is more…
CONTENT ESSENTIAL 5 – Hidden Value
We don’t know what we don’t know, right?
So, you can start by answering the burning questions your audience have and you can take your content one step further: show them what is hidden.
As a leader in your area of expertise, you can point to:
- myths and misconceptions;
- challenges;
- hidden obstacles;
- mistakes to avoid;
- the first step in the right direction.
Much like a guide, point out to the obstacles and perils to avoid and also to the right direction to take.

Most people don’t know it but they’re posting in a vacuum.
If the post falls and nobody hears it, does it fall?
If you post and nobody is there to see it, does it really exist?
So, the third thing that needs to happen...
You need to build an audience so that your audience sees what you post.
You can certainly build that audience organically. Here's how...
Growing Your Audience on Social Media Organically
Making yourself discoverable is a two-way avenue: your content is one way and the people who see your content (your audience) is the other.
Social media is a great place to grow your audience of people ready to discover you… if done right. (If done wrong, social media can be a waste of time).
In the same spirit of this whole guide, I’ll show you how I’ve been using social media from the middle of the Alps in Europe to grow an audience for my business and attract my best clients.
WARNING – You Don’t Need to Become a Button Expert
Social media and its buttons tend to change constantly. (Sometimes I think they change just for the sake of changing).
The simple strategy you’ll discover is the foundation (and it is pretty stable) regardless of how many times the different platforms change the buttons we have to press.
I’ve seen that it’s NOT in the mastery of the buttons where the clients live. It is in a solid strategy.
STEP 1 – Audience Clarity
Before you can connect with people you need to know what kind of people we’re looking to connect with. In other words, who is your audience and what are they already engaging in on social media.
A Little Exercise (1 ½ min)
We’re going to do a little exercise to get our creative juices flowing.
Let’s think for a second about Starbucks. Let’s pretend that you’re sitting at a table at Starbucks sipping coffee. From your table you can see the door. What kind of person do you expect to come in? What kind of person don’t you expect to see in a place like Starbucks?
Take 30 seconds to get a sense of the kind of people you expect to see at Starbucks.
Now let’s do it with your audience. Think about your social media profile as if it were a physical place. What kind of people do you expect to see there? What kind of people don’t belong there?
Take 1 minute to get a sense of the kind of audience you’re looking for.
There are no right or wrong answers. Any answers you come up with are going to help you as a starting point.
Some questions to help you refine your audience:
- What books/magazines/newspapers does your ideal client/customer read?
- Who do they listen to?
- What associations do they belong to?
- What podcasts do they listen to?
- What Facebook groups or LinkedIn groups are they a member of?
- What forums do they belong to?
- What events do they attend?
- What websites do they visit? What blogs do they read?
- What tools do they use?
- What products do they buy?
- What TV shows do they watch?
STEP 2 - Search
Become best friends with the search function of the platform of your choice. Look up the places where your audience hangs out already on the platform of your choice.
STEP 3 - Connect
A simple way to connect with people is to say a virtual “hi”. My favorite way of doing that is to follow them, like their content and leave them relevant comments.

These are my two favorite social media platforms where I'm building my audience organically today, and where most of my clients come from...
X and Pinterest.
Both places have allowed me to build audiences who actually see my posts. Both places also allow me to advertise to reach even more people with my posts if I want to.
NOTE - Pinterest has a great potential because it's more of a search engine for buyers than a social media platform. Pinterest is a place where people search for what they want to create. Many Pinterest users are used to purchasing what they find on Pinterest.
A pin can drive traffic to your website for months, in contrast to other social media platforms where your posts become irrelevant in a matter of hours.
NOTE - Here is the lifespan of your posts on different platforms so that you can see where it might make sense for your business to put your efforts. (Source: NP Digital).
TikTok - 10-39 minutes
X – 30-60 minutes
Facebook - 4-6 hours
Instagram – 6-10 hours
LinkedIn – 11-15 hours
Podcast – 24 hours
YouTube – 17 days
Pinterest – 5 months

You can ‘rent’ somebody else's audience by advertising. Here's where Facebook and Instagram come in play for me.
You can build an audience all you want there, but if you don't pay to play, they don't see what you post.
